Cross Canada Daily Flight Log: Follow Along and Return Regularly!
Tuesday 16 July 2024: Resurgo Place - Moncton Museum, Moncton, NB. Today was spent engaging visitors and a school group at the Moncton Museum and the Transportation Discovery Centre. Many aspects of Moncton’s history in Canadian aviation are highlighted here, including local pilots in WWI, propeller designs by Turnbull in 1910, the first plane landing at Moncton Field in 1921, and training thousands of pilots as part of the WWII British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP). There’s even a very colourful biplane with a hull made from a canoe hanging from the sky - now that has to be a Canadian signature design! This was our first presentation organized at a museum for the general public and kids, complete with our Wings of Opportunity Foundation banner and aviation equipment such as navigation maps, radio with headset, and flight logbook. The staff even prepared a surprise “build your own plane” activity for kids which was a hit throughout the day! The Resurgo team is simply wonderful - you and your family will enjoy their work. You can find a video recap of the day on our social media accounts. Enjoy!
Monday, 15 July 2024: Moncton, NB. After a very short visit of the Moncton Flight College, the Wings of Opportunity exchanged aviation experiences with the air cadet program leadership responsible for the Power Pilot Training Course (PPTC) in Moncton, NB. Many laughs and harrowing tales were shared, along with the reminder that we are all certainly connected to each other by less than six degrees of separation. A special evening was organized to share common experiences between the current PPTC cadet scholars and the Wings of Opportunity pilot, a previous cadet and PPTC scholar from 2022. The discussion included upcoming solo flights for all, a momentous occasion engraved in the memories of perhaps all pilots, and preparatory reviews for the upcoming Transport Canada exam. This was our first meeting with potential applicants for the night rating scholarship 2024 and it was confirmed that most have a desire to pursue a career in aviation, a large majority indicate a strong interest in the scholarship opportunities, and many would need the scholarship to continue their training. The leadership of this air cadet training group is in very good hands, with deep experience from across the Canadian Armed Forces. We wish the twelve cadets good luck with their solos and exams ahead. There will be blue skies very soon in your future!
Sunday, 14 July 2024: St-Jean, QC. To Moncton, NB. After months of preparation, the Wings of Opportunity Foundation began its cross Canada flight to raise awareness for our activities and scholarships for 2024. We are flying a Beechcraft Sundowner in burnt yellow, with today’s leg navigating from St-Jean, QC. to Moncton, NB. The departure event was held with many family members and donors. The flight took us near an active parachute jumping site, over Lac Mégantic, the rolling hills of Maine USA, and multiple windmill farms. The weather was perfect, dancing around with beautiful cotton-ball-shaped clouds, and ended with a soft, smooth landing. After taxiing to the Moncton Flight College, we were greeted by friendly dispatch staff, the Foundation’s flight crew, and one of our donors who organized a celebratory dinner. We will be posting on a regular basis so stay tuned, spread the word, and enjoy the pictures and videos on social media!
We need your help to make the flight a success!
If our initiative to educate youth about aviation inspires you and you are the owner of a single-engine airplane, please consider lending our charity your aircraft for the flight - we can arrange test flights and inspections.
If you know an organization that would be interested in making fuel donations and/or hotel accommodations, we'd be very thankful for you to put us in touch with them. If you think you can help in any other way, please reach out to us!
